Many of the most widely renowned composers concentrated in vocal music during the Middle Ages, when the Catholic church was the dominating cultural and political power in Western Europe. Written musical notation and solfege are examples of important technical tools that were initially developed during the Middle Ages. From the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century to about the 15th century, the Medieval period was known as the Middle Ages.Įxplorations into the nature of pitches and rhythms began in Medieval cathedrals and abbeys, and eventually evolved into what would become standardized composing and performing techniques much later in the 18th century. Only a few traces of Ancient Greek music have survived, despite the fact that it was immensely important and influential in the past. Historians frequently point to the Middle Ages as the start of a continuous tradition of notated Western music, which evolved into what we now call "classical" or "art" music.
